IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - Iowa City council members voted four to three to move forward with plans to build a new home for its police department in concert with the Johnson County sheriff’s headquarters and a new jail.
It’s is far from a done deal, but it’s a significant step forward.
The resolution would set up a partnership with the city and the county to start hammering out the details of this joint law enforcement facility.
The Johnson County Sheriff has long pointed out the problems with the current jail. A study to build one joint facility instead of two separate buildings showed it would save taxpayers $10 million.
Even that savings didn’t convince three council members that building a combined jail and police station is the right move.
