HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- The City of Hartford was loud and proud in the Atrium of City Hall Tuesday evening in celebration of a local school being renamed in honor of the city's first Puerto Rican superintendent.
The Hartford Board of Education voted Tuesday to rename Classical Magnet School to Hernán LaFontaine Classical Magnet School. He was the superintendent of Hartford Public Schools for 12 years, a pioneer in education and an inspiration to future leaders.
"The first Puerto Rican superintendent here in the city, in the state and in the United States," said Evelyn Lafontaine, Hernán's wife.
LaFontaine grew up in Spanish Harlem in Manhattan, attending Stuyvesant High School and City College of New York, where earned a bachelor's degree and master's degree in science, according to t
