MADISON (WKOW) -- Just after 1 a.m. Wednesday morning, the Madison Common Council held a vote to extend the contract for the Dairy Drive encampment.
Ten alders voted yes, nine voted no, and one abstained. Since 11 'yes' votes were needed to pass, the contract will not be extended.
The encampment was built as a temporary solution to homelessness in Madison using COVID relief funds. A proposal is under consideration to delay its demolition until April.
Supporters said Dairy Drive is unique because, unlike other shelters, residents can keep their personal belongings. Several residents also spoke during the meeting.
"I'm able to have visitation with my son, where I can make him food, play basketball, and take him to the park," said Stacy, a Dairy Drive resident.
