NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) -- A New York City employee who worked with the NYC Employees’ Retirement System (NYCERS) was sentenced to prison for using his position to steal $646,000 worth of pension benefits, according to Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez.
The 41-year-old Brooklyn man illegally pocketed checks between Feb. 8, 2021 and Jan. 2, 2024 during his 15-year tenure as an Associate Retirement Benefits Examiner at NYCERS, Gonzalez announced on Wednesday.
Investigators found that the NYCERS worker reactivated paused pension payments for a Department of Sanitation supervisor who had passed away and stole checks worth $242,000, as well as monthly payments of $5,700 between May 2021 and January 2024.
