One of downtown Charleston's most historic and architecturally significant buildings could be heading to the auction block.

The monumental United States Custom House across from the City Market on East Bay Street is among six government-owned properties in the Southeast that the Public Buildings Reform Board is in the early stages of reviewing for "for possible disposition."

The agency said Sept. 17 that it will be meeting next week with a group of local representatives, including elected officials, commercial real estate executives and preservationists, to discuss the idea.
