JEFFERSON PARISH, La. — Thousands of Jefferson Parish homeowners and business owners will soon see their flood insurance premiums drop, thanks to a new federal rating that recognizes the parish's efforts to better protect residents from flooding.

Starting Oct. 1, 2025, unincorporated Jefferson Parish will move from a Class 5 to a Class 3 in the National Flood Insurance Program's Community Rating System — the first parish in Louisiana to reach that level and one of only 11 communities nationwide. The improved rating means a 35% discount on NFIP-backed flood insurance policies, which will automatically be applied at renewal.

Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng called the upgrade a win for families and businesses alike.
