TORTILLA FLAT, Ariz. — Tonto National Forest will be closing Canyon Lake for the next 16 weeks as safety inspections and maintenance are conducted.
Salt River Project and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation will be lowering the lake's water levels by 54 feet to complete work that ensures dam safety. This type of safety work is done every 20 years.
The lake's water levels must be lowered so inspectors can access equipment located underwater. During the project, water will be stored in reservoirs to ensure it isn't wasted. SRP said the drawdown will not interfere with water delivery to SRP customers.
Canyon Lake, located east of Mesa and Apache Junction, has over 57,000 acre-feet of water capacity.
