LONG ISLAND CITY, Queens (PIX11) -- At The Floating Hospital in Long Island City, families living in transitional housing are receiving gifts made with love, handmade quilts and dresses crafted by a group of retirees from Montrose, Pennsylvania.

Known as the “Giving Gals,” these women may never meet the children they’re helping, but their stitches carry threads of kindness that reach across 150 miles.

Four-year-old Raylis Ortega hugged her quilt, kissed her new dress, and twirled with lots of gratitude. Her mother says the experience is a reminder that kindness still exists.

The Floating Hospital, which provides healthcare and support to tens of thousands of homeless families each year, says the donations are a powerful example of strangers coming together to create hope in their commun
