COLUMBIA — The University of Missouri sent an email to faculty and staff Wednesday afternoon outlining guidance for university employees' speech on social media.
The email, signed by UM System President Mun Choi, Human Resources Vice President Marsha Fischer and Provost Matthew Martens, asked employees to ensure that when they speak as citizens, they do not appear to speak for the university.
"We are living in a period where we are regularly inundated with opinions on major events and key issues of the day," university leaders wrote in the email. "While we respect the rights of employees to speak as citizens on matters of public concern, we also write to remind our faculty and staff to use those freedoms responsibly, especially when engaging on social media."
