HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Conservationists are calling on the public to help protect native seabirds after they found 11 of them that appear to have been killed along Kauaʻi’s southern shores.
On Wednesday, conservationist Andre Raine encountered two dead ʻuaʻu kani (wedge-tailed shearwater) seabirds along the Mahaʻulelpu Heritage Trail.
Raine just so happened to be returning to the spot where he found nine other dead ʻuaʻu kani on Saturday when he found the new pair.
“This isn’t an isolated incident. Happens every year,” Raine said. “You’re seeing these birds dying needlessly.”
Raine believes a feral cat or stray dog may be responsible for the birds’ deaths.
“What we see time and time again is that these birds will just get hammered by introduced predators,” Raine added.
