COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — Four men from Georgia received federal prison sentences for orchestrating a nationwide fraud scheme. Federal prosecutors say the operation tricked victims, including those in Iowa, into believing they faced arrest for failing to appear in court. Russell Tafron Weatherspoon, Karl Andre Dieudonne, Demonte Tequis Brazil, and Gregory Lamar Scorza used fake law enforcement identities and spoofed phone numbers to demand cash bonds from victims. The scam included false legal proceedings and threats of arrest. Weatherspoon organized the fraud from a Georgia prison, using smuggled cell phones delivered by drone.
