Lion reacts to lightning and thunder.

Footage from South Africa reveals that even the king of beasts can be frightened by a sudden electrical storm.

The accompanying footage, captured in Mala Mala Game Reserve, was shared this week by Latest Sightings - Kruger, along with the title: “Lightning gives lions the fright of their lives!”

It shows two male lions resting in the dark when the sky lights up and thunder booms. The lions take up defensive postures and gaze skyward, as if trying to locate the source of this ominous interruption.

The footage, originally shared by Mala Mala guide Gabriel Harmer in 2024, provides a glimpse into the behavior of wild animals when something mysterious and unpredictable occurs.

The most popular comment, with more than 2,000 likes, reads: “Them boys thought Mufasa was trying to break through.”

That, of course, was in reference to the character in Disney’s 1994 animated film, The Lion King.
