A crucial game for the Toronto Blue Jays this Friday will now be accessible to a wider audience. Last-minute negotiations have lifted the blackout for many fans who were at risk of missing one of the team's most significant matchups of the season. The game against the Kansas City Royals is pivotal, as it could potentially clinch a playoff spot for the Jays.
Originally, the game was set to be an exclusive broadcast on Apple TV+. However, the Apple TV+ feed will now be simulcast on Sportsnet, allowing all Canadian fans to watch this important late-season contest.
This arrangement did come with a cost. A source familiar with the negotiations revealed that, in exchange for the simulcast, next Friday's game between the Jays and the Tampa Bay Rays at Rogers Centre will be an Apple TV+ exclusive.
The negotiations involved Major League Baseball officials, as Rogers, the owner of both the Blue Jays and Sportsnet, sought a way for fans to view a game that could celebrate a playoff berth. Heading into Thursday's games, the Jays' magic number to secure at least a wild-card spot was down to three.
The deal was quickly arranged after Sportsnet and the Jays reached out to MLB to explore possible solutions. MLB then contacted Apple TV executives on behalf of the team, leading to the agreement. A spokesperson for Rogers stated, "This is a really exciting time of year for Blue Jays fans, and we wanted to try and find a way for Canadians to watch Friday's game on Sportsnet, especially at this pivotal moment of the season."
Fans have shown significant interest in the Jays, with last Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles attracting a season-high 1.6 million viewers, despite competing with NFL games. Many Canadian fans have expressed frustration over the number of games broadcast on Apple TV+, which will increase to six with the addition of next Friday's game.
While this Friday's game will be available on conventional television, it will not feature the familiar broadcast team of Dan Shulman and Buck Martinez. To compensate, Sportsnet will produce a pre-game show, which is typically not done for Apple TV+ games. If the Royals game results in a postseason clinching scenario, Sportsnet plans to air a post-game show to capture the anticipated celebrations in the clubhouse.
The decision to return next Friday's game to Apple TV+ was seen as a necessary trade-off by Sportsnet and the Jays. A source noted, "It required a trade-off. (Sportsnet) felt this would be preferable."
