When the Seattle City Council passed a new graffiti ordinance in July that allows the city to impose civil penalties against prolific taggers who cause vast amounts of property damage with spray paint, rollers and paint-filled fire extinguishers, a last-minute amendment was added to make the penalties retroactive for three years.
Seattle City Attorney Ann Davison took advantage of that retroactive provision this week when she invoked the graffiti ordinance for the first time by filing lawsuits against three taggers, one of whom is a member of an infamous tagging crew from Los Angeles. The oldest of the allegations date to December 2021 though most are from spring 2023 through this summer, according to the lawsuits.
The lawsuits filed Tuesday in Seattle Municipal Court against Eduin Rene
