A coalition of faculty, students and workers at UCSF and campuses across the statewide university system are suing President Donald Trump’s administration, alleging the federal government is illegally threatening to withhold and cut funding in an effort to “coerce” the University of California “into suppressing free speech and academic freedom rights.”

Lawyers representing labor unions and faculty associations at all 10 UC campuses wrote in a complaint filed Tuesday in the Northern District of California that the administration’s demands and tactics amount to multiple violations of constitutional and civil rights.
