DERBY, Conn. (WFSB) - Police in derby are investigating a potential crime spree happening in the parking lot of a grocery store.

For the past month, police say shoppers at Big Y on New Haven Avenue have been the victims of purse thefts.

The suspects are targeting people while they’re distracted, usually while loading groceries into their cars. They are pulling up in stolen vehicles wearing full face masks before fleeing the area.

“I mean, that’s scary. I feel like you just have to be constantly aware of your surroundings wherever you go, even at the grocery store,” said Rose Duvall.

Derby police say these thefts have happened eight or nine times. Police are not sure if it is the same group of suspects committing these crimes.
