SEATTLE — Like any normal person, Karla has checked her mail thousands of times before. She usually does so with her Pomeranian puppy, Lucky, bringing him to the mailbox that sits across the street from her house.
KING 5 has honored Karla's request not to use her last name because she still carries fears over her residency status, given the current political climate.
However, for the first time in 21 years, Karla isn't scared to open her mailbox. Earlier this month, she received her Green Card, or her Legal Permanent Residency card.
"I just opened it like crazy, like because I'm like, 'Is this real or not real? Is it? Or is it not?'" she said. "When I read it, I was crying."
A month ago, Karla had to make a decision: Show up to her final interview at the immigration office in Tukwila o
