BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - Attorneys representing the Jefferson County Commission have filed paperwork in US District Court to appeal a decision from the Eleventh Circuit ordering commission districts be redrawn.
On Tuesday, Sept. 16, Federal Judge Madeline Haikala ruled the districting plan for Jefferson County - finalized in 2021 - violated the Fourteenth Amendment , saying it could not be used in future elections.
Lawyers for the county are now asking to stay that ruling while they appeal the decision.
The original lawsuit, filed in 2023, said maps drawn after the 2020 Census continued to pack Black voters into two commission districts, diluting their voting strength in the other three districts of Jefferson County.
