Motorists are facing significant delays on the M5 this morning due to a serious car crash. The incident has resulted in the closure of a section of the motorway in both directions between junction 27 for Tiverton and junction 28 for Cullompton in Devon.
The crash occurred on the southbound carriageway, causing traffic to back up to junction 25 near Taunton in Somerset. Northbound traffic is also heavily affected, with queues stretching back to junction 29, where the M5 connects with the A30 at Exeter.
Emergency services, including Devon and Cornwall Police, are currently on the scene. The National Highways has indicated that the road is likely to remain closed for most of the day.
Diversion routes have been established for both northbound and southbound drivers. For northbound traffic, motorists are advised to exit the M5 at junction 28 and follow the B3181 towards Willand, continuing through Sampford Peverell before rejoining the M5 at junction 27.
For southbound traffic, drivers should leave the M5 at junction 27 and take the first exit onto the A38.
The situation has been exacerbated by two secondary incidents that occurred in the queue for the original crash, further complicating the traffic conditions. Motorists are advised to expect considerable delays throughout the morning as emergency services continue to manage the scene.
