PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Pedestrians and bicyclists will have the Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive Bridge all to themselves this weekend. Then, drivers will once again get to use the bridge starting Monday morning.

Members of bicycle organizations were the first to cross the newly reconstructed bridge on Friday after a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Mayor Cherelle Parker.

The bridge, which is part of MLK Drive, serves as a crucial alternative to I-76.

It was widened to include three lanes of traffic with a 10.5 ft. shared pedestrian and bike path connecting to the MLK Drive Trail, along the western banks of the Schuylkill River.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive Bridge was supposed to open early 2025, but cold weather during the winter caused a few delays, officials said.
