Brett James, the beloved American singer-songwriter, has tragically died at the age of 57.

He was one of three people who died in a crash after a small-engine plane descended into a field close to a school in North Carolina.

The plane, a Cirrus SR22T aircraft, left Nashville, Tennessee and crashed into Macon Country at around 3pm on Thursday (September 19).

The National Transportation Safety Board is launching an investigation into the tragic incident.

In a statement to the American news network, News 13, the FAA said: "A Cirrus SR22T crashed in a field in Franklin, North Carolina, around 3pm local time on Thursday, September 18. Three people were on board.
