COLLIN COUNTY, Texas — A North Texas animal shelter has temporarily suspended dog adoptions after "multiple confirmed cases of canine distemper" in the shelter.
The Collin County Animal Shelter said the decision to temporarily suspend dog adoptions until further notice was made out of an abundance of caution "to protect the health and safety of animals in the shelter and throughout the community." The shelter remains open for cat adoptions.
Canine distemper is a contagious disease that affects dogs' respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems that spreads among unvaccinated dogs via coughing, sneezing, or shared food and water bowls.
"As soon as we learned of a confirmed distemper case on September 13, our staff and veterinarians acted immediately to protect the animals in our c
