CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (KCRG) - The Iowa Board of Regents approved preliminary plans for a new center at the University of Northern Iowa named for Republican Senator Charles Grassley.

The approval clears the way for continued planning for the center with UNI anticipating a separate request to formally create the center next year.

According to board documents, the Grassley Center at UNI would be a center for the study of democratic governance and public service, focusing on civic education. It would also serve as a home for archives of Sen. Grassley’s public work, spanning nearly 7 decades in elected office.

Sen. Grassley is an alum of UNI and the longest-serving active U.S. Senator, having spent 44 years representing Iowa in the Senate.
