SKOWHEGAN, Maine (WABI) - A project 15 years in the making has officially opened its doors in Skowhegan. It’s a building that works as a home base for crews and volunteers who work on the maintenance of Maine’s section of the Appalachian Trail.
“I’ve been all over the United States. I’ve never seen anything like this anywhere,” answered Lester Kenway.
Kenway worked as the Chair of the Fundraising Committee for the project. The Maine Appalachian Trail Club has been the host of trail maintenance crews since the 1970s but has lacked a home-base.
“The club maintains 287 miles of trail from Grafton Notch to Katahdin, and we wanted a place where we could get good access to the trail,” added Kenway.
It’s not a visitor’s center or a place for people to hike, it’s so those working on the trails
