OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) -- Attendance is a major issue in schools across the country, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic.

For some students, there are compounding barriers that prevent them from walking into the building.

Omaha Public Schools is working to address attendance issues in the district.

Kayla Pitt is the Dean of Students at Buena Vista High School.

“The years that were impacted by COVID, those deeply impacted our student attendance rates, and we have since seen a recovery effort when it comes to student attendance,” Pitt said.

A report released by OPS last year showed more than 40% of students in the district through were chronically absent: meaning they miss at least 10% of school.

Attendance has a ripple affect across a student’s education.
