MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- WREG has learned the gun found with a Whitehaven High School student was stolen from law enforcement in 2016.

WREG found out the gun belonged to a now-former deputy sheriff in Louisiana.

In 2016, at the downtown Holiday Inn Express parking lot, Memphis police responded to a car theft. The victim was listed as the sheriff of Jefferson Davis Parish in Louisiana.

Officers say they responded to the scene on July 1st, 2016.

The victim, now, former Sheriff Ivy Woods, said his Chevy Suburban was broken into.

His assistant, at the time, Chief Deputy Christopher Ivey was reportedly traveling with the sheriff and told officers his department's weapon was missing.

The weapon was a 40-caliber Glock.

The suspect also took assorted clothes and jewelry from both Woods and Ivey.
