MADISON, Wis. -- One of Madison's biggest road projects is about to begin. When all is said and done, Madison's lakefront along John Nolen Drive will be transformed.

Phase one of the project begins in October. Traffic will be shifted to one side of the roadway from Broom Street to Lakeside Street as part of the work.

"They'll be reconstructing the streets, the bridges, the pathway, the two intersections with Broom Street and North Shore," deputy city engineer Chris Petykowski said. "Redoing all the pavement, all the lighting, the traffic signals and that sort of thing."

Starting work in October might seem weird for a project in Wisconsin, where it's often said that the two seasons are winter and construction, but for John Nolen Drive the timing actually makes sense.
