Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer (10) throws a pass during his team's game against Michigan.

What appear to be two of the SEC's most-improved teams will face off this weekend, with the winner taking an important early season step closer to their College Football Playoff dreams.

No. 12 Oklahoma will host No. 25 Auburn on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in a matchup of undefeated teams.

The game's biggest storyline isn't particularly hard to identify. The Tigers' undefeated start has been keyed by quarterback Jackson Arnold, a former five-star recruit who transferred to Auburn last offseason after playing two seasons at Oklahoma. Arnold has been strong so far in coach Hugh Freeze's offense, with 693 total yards and eight touchdowns while completing 69.6% of his passes and averaging 5.5 yards per rush.

He'll be back at the school he used to call home, where he'll take on a Sooners team that overhauled its offense by bringing in the offensive coordinator-quarterback tandem of Ben Arbuckle and John Mateer. Led by Mateer's 1,105 total yards and nine touchdowns, Oklahoma is averaging 33.7 points per game, which included a 24-13 victory against what was then a top-15 Michigan team.

The meeting is just the third between the programs since 1972.

  • Prediction: Oklahoma 30, Auburn 24

The Sooners have been about as impressive as anyone in college football through the first three weeks of the season, with a suffocating defense and a Heisman Trophy front-runner in Mateer. The Tigers are much improved from a year ago, thanks in some part to Arnold, but it won't be enough to come away with a road win.
