NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - Herrell's Ice Cream has announced the release of its new 'Honey Cake' ice cream flavor.

Honey cake is believed to have been invented in Italy in the early 12th century and is a delicacy in Russia and Mediterranean cultures. The dessert is seen as a symbol of a sweet new year in several religions and regions.

Herrell's release of Honey Cake ice cream on Saturday coincides with the celebration of Rosh Hashanah, which begins on Monday, September 22 and ends on Wednesday, September 24. Honey cake and apples dipped in honey are traditional foods for families to welcome the Jewish New Year.
