When Heather Petersen’s landlord sent her a letter discussing the terms of lease renewal in August, she noticed a price hike.
Petersen said her mobile home in Holly will have a monthly rent of $1,975 should she renew the lease. The last $75 was tacked on after the village council passed a last-minute property tax increase in June to plug a hole in the government’s budget.
Her rent had been raised before, but the $75 was the final straw.
“If you end up being someone like me, that extra $75 that kind of pops up out of nowhere — that’s a lot for me,” said Petersen, a single mother of two children. She works at Avia Restaurant in downtown Holly when she’s not selling goods like house plants and crystals through a side business she runs.
