Robby Fabbri said Saturday that there were multiple NHL teams interested in him early in free agency. But as July bled into August and then September arrived, the former first-rounder came to grips with the reality that he may not get a contract.
This past week, he jumped on what he felt was the best opportunity — a training camp tryout with the Penguins, joining a horde of forwards fighting for NHL jobs.
“It came down to the very last day. There was a handful of teams circling ever since July 1,” he said. “At the end of the day, I was excited about this organization and this team and what they’ve got going on here. They were always at the top of my list.”
Fabbri, 29, was drafted 21st overall by the St. Louis Blues in 2014. In 2015-16, he produced 18 goals and 37 points as a rookie. Bot
