Eight people face a combined 70 charges, many firearm-related, after loaded weapons were recovered during two traffic stops in Peel Region earlier this month.

In a news release issued Saturday, Peel Regional Police said officers from the Strategic and Tactical Enforcement Police (STEP) unit were conducting proactive patrols on Sept. 13 around 3 a.m. and initiated simultaneous traffic stops on two vehicles believed to be associated with one another.

“Upon approaching the first vehicle, officers observed multiple open alcoholic beverage containers in plain view,” police said in the news release. “This led to a search of the vehicle, during which a loaded handgun was located and seized.
