Fourth and Fifth streets are almost entirely back to the configuration they had prior to the city’s pilot project that had reduced them to two one-lane, one-way roads.
The pilot project, which launched last summer, converted the two roads from two-lane one-way to one-lane in an effort to reduce speeds and provide facilities for cyclists with a protected bike lane. Public opposition to the project led the City Council to vote to return the streets to their previous design south of Grand Avenue.
Proponents of the project, including many who live in that area, spoke in favor of keeping the changes at least north of Grand Avenue where the area is more residential. The City Council did not vote to revert those sections.
