The Baltimore Orioles claimed right-hander Dom Hamel off waivers. He will be optioned to Triple-A Norfolk.

The New York Mets designated the 26-year-old for assignment Thursday.

Hamel was a third-round pick by the Mets in 2021. This season, he appeared in 31 games for Triple-A Syracuse. Across 67 2/3 innings, he recorded a 5.32 ERA and 75 strikeouts.

The right-hander made his MLB debut Sept. 17, pitching one scoreless inning for New York against the San Diego Padres. He allowed three hits in the outing.

The Orioles have already been eliminated from playoff contention with a 73-81 record. Hamel will give them another young arm to develop in their system.
