ELLIS COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) — A 52-year-old Hays man was seriously injured Saturday morning when a vehicle struck his bicycle on Old U.S. Highway 40 in Ellis County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says the crash happened around 10:35 a.m. in the 1200 block of Old U.S. 40, a little more than two miles northwest of U.S. 183 Alternate.

Investigators report the bicyclist was riding along the shoulder heading east when a 2012 Chevrolet Captiva rear-ended him.

The rider was taken to Hays Medical Center with suspected serious injuries. Troopers noted he was wearing a helmet.

The driver of the SUV, a 17-year-old from Ellis, was not hurt.

The highway patrol continues to investigate the crash.
