A South Jersey nonprofit has fired its leader for inquiring about allowing local middle schoolers to participate in a reenactment depicting the abolitionist movement at an upcoming community event, the organization’s board president said Saturday.

Stand Up for Salem’s executive director , Betsy McBride, was fired on Saturday by the nonprofit, which focuses on civic work for Salem City, according to Tom Smith, who reported her termination to NJ Advance Media.

McBride is also a former Pennsauken Committee member and has a background in working for nonprofits, according to Stand Up for Salem’s website. She was initially suspended after Smith learned Wednesday that she approached Salem Middle School about using its students for the portrayal at the 350th city anniversary event next month.
