TRAVERSE CITY — The Michigan State Police are warning that tens of millions in budget cuts passed by the state House could greatly affect Northern Michigan’s rural communities.
Col. James F. Grady II said the proposed FY26 budget reduces MSP funding by more than $40 million, including nearly 300 positions in post operations.
Without that funding, the agency said it may be forced to cut overtime, restrict patrols, and even lay off recruits set to graduate this fall.
One of the counties that could be greatly affected is Isabell County who relies in state police after getting rid of their sheriff patrol.
The plan also eliminates funding for the Secure Cities Partnership, which sends troopers and crime data support to high-crime areas.
