Mackinac Island — Michigan House Speaker Matt Hall said Saturday night that he's "pretty confident" lawmakers will be able to avoid a government shutdown, with 10 days remaining ahead of their deadline to approve a new state budget.
Hall, R-Richland Township, spoke at the Michigan GOP's Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference inside the Grand Hotel, telling attendees that he was working on the budget "very late last night." For months, Hall, Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks, D-Grand Rapids, have been struggling to reach a compromise on a new funding plan.
