(WJW) – A new study has found that radiation from medical imaging is associated with a higher risk of blood cancers in children after researchers examined data from nearly 4 million children.

The study was led by UC San Francisco and UC Davis and funded by the National Institutes of Health. The study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine on September 17.

According to the study, the risk of blood cancer increases based on the amount of radiation a child receives. The risk of developing cancer also varied significantly by the type of imaging performed, such as CT scans vs. radiographs, the study showed.
