PHOENIX — At a moment when the nation needs our children to learn about civics, a new study reveals that educators are afraid to teach it.

“This shocked us,” Liam Julian, author of the study and a vice president at the Sandra Day O'Connor Institute in Phoenix, said on this weekend's "Sunday Square Off."

The findings strike at the heart of the mission dear to late Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor: nurturing democracy through civics education.

The study, based on surveys of experienced civics educators across the country, highlights a lack of teacher preparation, unclear guidance, and insufficient support from school leaders.
