White-blue skies, summer temperatures and smiling people wearing dirndls and lederhosen: the 190th Oktoberfest kicked off in the German city of Munich on Saturday.

Visitors from Munich and around the world are expected to celebrate in the large beer tents until Oct. 5.

More than six million people usually attend each year.

“Oktoberfest means: Good friends, fun times and lots of beer,” said Randy Kelly, a visitor from Florida who is on his 28th visit to the beer festival.

The record stands at over seven million, according to German news agency dpa.

After the tapping at 1200 local time (1000 GMT), the first tents were already closed in the early afternoon due to overcrowding.
