A preteen’s feelings are tumultuous enough without the bonus of tragedy and upheaval. Stow children’s author Gloria G. Adams knows this, and her “Color Me Skye” is an imaginative take on the developing emotions of a young girl.

Skye is a sensitive 12-year-old whose father was killed in action when she was 5; she wears his dog tags on a chain. Her mother remarried, and the man Skye calls “Dim Tim” is inaccessible and seems insensitive. Skye says she “didn’t ask for a stepfather. Didn’t want one. Don’t want one now.”
