DETROIT ― After Saturday’s loss, the Tigers’ fifth straight, their eighth in the last nine games, and their 17th in the last 24, manager AJ Hinch struggled to find the words to describe what’s happening.

“It’s difficult to explain,” he said.

This was a Guardians team that was left for dead, trailing the Tigers by an unfathomable 15.5 games as recently as July 8, and still by 11 games as recently as Sept. 4. Detroit’s largest lead in the AL Central this season peaked at 14 games, back early in the summer, when the Guardians weren’t even in second place.

In their 125-year history, the Tigers never have failed to make the playoffs after amassing a double-digit lead on second place at some point in the season.
