DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers didn’t go to bed feeling great on Saturday night after a gut-wrenching loss to the Atlanta Braves, their fifth in a row. When they woke up and checked the standings on Sunday morning, they probably didn’t feel much better.

Across the league, every scenario went against the Tigers, starting with the Cleveland Guardians’ decisive doubleheader sweep of the Minnesota Twins. The Guardians outscored the Twins 14-0 across the two games, didn’t use any of their top relievers, and positioned themselves well for a four-game sweep on Sunday.

Other contenders also won. The Mariners beat the Astros to tighten their hold on the No. 2 playoff seed, a spot that recently belonged to the Tigers but is now slipping away. That means Detroit would no longer receive a first-round
