The Lewis and Clark Humane Society began construction on its dog kennels Monday through a $46,600 grant from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Abraham Construction is adding “portals” to their adoption kennels, doorways that give pets a separate place to sleep, eat, and play away from where they use the bathroom.

“Portaled kennels give nervous animals the option to retreat and rest when they need a break, helping them feel safer and less stressed,” the Lewis and Clark Humane Society said in a Facebook post. This is considered the best practice for sheltering animals.
