LOS ANGELES – After a roughly 10-minute stoppage of play, Michigan State linebacker Wayne Matthews was loaded into an ambulance and taken to a hospital.

Two of his teammates – safety Nikai Martinez and defensive lineman Quindarius Dunnigan – offered support on their way up to tunnel after being injured the play before and were done for the night.

One play later, USC punched in its fourth score in five possessions just before halftime then added another touchdown coming out of the break. Down 31-10 on the road, it looked like the wheels would come off for a depleted team before a red-eye flight back to East Lansing.

The Spartans dropped their Big Ten opener but showed a lot of mettle in Saturday’s 45-31 loss to the No. 25 Trojans at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum .
