NATO warplanes have been deployed for the second consecutive day following a significant escalation in hostilities involving Russian airstrikes near Ukraine's borders. The Polish Operational Command confirmed the deployment of fighter jets in response to a large-scale attack on Ukraine that approached EU airspace.
Poland's armed forces activated their ground-based air defence systems to the highest alert level. In a statement, they noted, "Polish and allied aircraft are operating in our airspace, while ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems have been brought to the highest state of readiness."
The operation concluded after Russian airstrikes on Ukraine ceased early on Saturday morning. The Polish command described their actions as "preventative and aimed at securing airspace in areas adjacent to the threatened area." This latest incident follows a pattern of Russian provocations, including a recent incursion into Estonian airspace by Russian military jets.
On Friday, two MiG-31 jets entered Estonian airspace without permission, prompting a swift response from NATO allies, including jets scrambled from Italy, Sweden, and Finland. Estonia's Prime Minister, Kristen Michal, emphasised the need for a united response to such provocations, stating, "We consider it essential to consult with our allies to ensure shared situational awareness and to agree on our next joint steps."
In addition to the airspace violations, Russian forces launched a series of drone and missile strikes on Ukraine, with reports indicating that 619 drones and missiles were deployed in a single attack. Ukrainian officials reported that they successfully intercepted the majority of these threats, including 552 drones and several ballistic and cruise missiles.
The situation remains tense, with NATO continuously monitoring developments in the region. The alliance's commitment to securing its eastern flank is underscored by the recent deployments and heightened readiness of air defence systems. As the conflict continues, the potential for further escalations remains a concern for both NATO and European security.
