HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The Huntsville Police Department says an 18-year-old accidentally shot and killed a 16-year-old Saturday evening.

HPD said on Saturday, at about 7 p.m., officers went to a home on TeeJay Drive for a possible shooting in progress.

According to HPD, officers found a 16-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound. Authorities tried using life-saving measures, but the teen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Members of HPD's Major Crimes Unit responded to lead the investigation.

HPD said the investigation found the teen was inside a home on TeeJay Drive with 18-year-old DaeShawn Dewayne Harkey, of Huntsville.

HPD's investigation revealed that Harkey believed a gun he was handling was unloaded when it discharged, hitting and killing the 16-year-old.
