BEAUMONT, Texas — A crowd of about 300 people gathered in the Old Market Basket parking lot Sunday to honor political activist Charlie Kirk during a vigil organized by Republican community leaders.

The demonstration took place as Kirk's funeral was being held thousands of miles away. Southeast Texans held signs and flags while listening to prayers and words of comfort.

Speakers included former Beaumont Councilman Mike Getz, Jefferson County Republican Chairman candidate Shilo Platts, Texas House Representative candidate Dr. Ray Callas and local pastors.

Getz, who organized the event, said Kirk was a man of faith and great values. He said he felt compelled to organize the gathering after seeing negative social media posts about Kirk's death.
