Michael King pitched five-plus scoreless innings and the San Diego Padres held on for a 3-2 win over the host Chicago White Sox on Sunday.
The Padres (85-71) reduced their magic number to 2 to make the playoffs as they won two of three.
The White Sox (58-98) have lost eight of their last nine. It was their final home game of the season.
The White Sox scored both their runs in the seventh.
Both came on bases-loaded walks by reliever Mason Miller, who came in with the bases full and one out. He walked Miguel Vargas to bring in the first run, struck out Edgar Quero and then walked pinch hitter Andrew Benintendi to force in the second run.
Miller then got Lenyn Sosa to ground out.
King (5-3) was the winner, allowing four hits, walking four and striking out four.
